Theatre Workshop Schedule

This year’s Karitos Theatre Department is all about hands-on theatre! You won’t be sitting in a chair getting lectured, or even working on classroom exercises. Instead, you’ll craft a short play from start to finish, then perform it for other conferees!* Choose one of our three Intensive Tracks where you’d like to invest your time. Then with the help of our professional faculty mentors, you’ll spend every breakout session “learning by doing”—putting together a powerful drama with a team of other students. You’ll leave with new insights and fresh scripts for your drama ministry. . . along with the satisfaction of a job well-done!

YOU MUST PRE-REGISTER for the track you plan to attend!

Read about the tracks below, then tell us which one you’ve chosen.

PLAYWRITING WORKSHOPS (ROOM A)
Through a series of participational exercises, you’ll hone your skills in creating relevant and relatable drama that can emotionally and spiritually challenge your audience. Attend one, two, or all of the sessions to develop your craft.

Session 1: Creating Compelling Stories (Nancy Hanna)
Discover the elements of compelling story as you nail down the Who, the What, and the Why in your play.

Session 2: Developing Memorable Characters (Nancy Hanna)
Create three-dimensional characters that are driven by real human needs, overcoming obstacles and flaws on their “hero’s journey.”

Session 3: Putting Drama on Video (Nancy Hanna)
In this session, we’ll discuss the process for creating multi-layered short form scripts (drama sketches). We’ll look at the differences between writing for video and writing for live drama.

Session 4: Penning the Story of Grace (Nancy Hanna)
Sometimes, real life doesn’t end “happily ever after”—and neither should every play. We’ll address flawed characters, unfinished stories, and what happens when there isn’t an easy answer.

Session 5: Writing and Rewriting (Nancy Hanna)
Editing, cutting, and burning the fat off the page should become second nature to the playwright.

Session 6: Strong Endings (Nancy Hanna)
We’ll discuss some techniques to effectively end a script. This workshop will cover the beats, the reveal, and the revelation.

Playwriting students will join the other conferees in Room B
for Sessions 7 and 8.

ACTING/ DIRECTING INTENSIVE (ROOM C)
The Acting/ Directing Intensive is all about hands-on theatre! During six sessions, you’ll craft a short play from start to finish, then perform it for other conferees. Important: You must commit to all six sessions listed below to participate in the Acting/ Directing Intensive. If you are unable to commit for the duration, please select from our “One-Session Acting and Directing Workshops” offered in Room B.

Session 1: Acting Like a Professional (George Halitzka)
We’ll get started by spending one hour reviewing the fundamental techniques of “Method Acting,” used by skilled performers around the world. This session will give all participants a common technique and vocabulary as we begin rehearsing short plays.

Sessions 2-6: Hands-On Rehearsals (Laura Holland)
With the mentoring of faculty member Laura Holland, Professor of Theatre at Oral Roberts University, you’ll collaborate with other student actors and directors to prepare a short play for performance. You’ll leave with new insights and skills for your drama ministry. . . along with the satisfaction of a job well-done!

Acting/ Directing Intensive students will join the other conferees
in Room B for Sessions 7 and 8.

ONE-SESSION ACTING & DIRECTING WORKSHOPS (ROOM B)
If you’d like to learn more about acting and directing theatre (but can’t commit to our Acting/ Directing Intensive), check out these workshops.

Session 1: Acting Like a Professional (George Halitzka)
Please Note: This session only will be held in Room C.
Learn the fundamental techniques of “Method Acting” used by skilled performers around the world! This class will help you understand and practice a basic process you can use when approaching any role.

Session 2: Creating a Dynamic Character (Alan Atwood)
As an actor or director, how can you create characters that are dynamic, three-dimensional, and fit the needs of the story? We’ll discuss how you can understand the purpose of a particular character within the play, then make choices that will enhance the performance.

Session 3: Comedy Improv Basics (George Halitzka)
Learn to create effective and hilarious improv, just like on TV’s Whose Line Is It, Anyway? The skills you learn in this workshop will improve your confidence onstage, collaboration skills, and overall acting abilities.

Session 4: Comedy Improv Games (George Halitzka)
Note: It is strongly recommended that you attend “Comedy Improv Basics” (Session 3) before attending this workshop.
Here’s the next step in learning improv! You’ll discover the “rules” for playing performance-oriented improv games like “What I Should Have Said,” “Pillars,” and “Blind Date.”

Session 5: Hands-On Directing (Alan Atwood)
Improve your craft as a director by working with actual scenes! Learn more about developing blocking, communicating with actors, and coordinating all the elements of the production. Real-life situations (including real-life pitfalls) will be discussed to help you prepare for your next production.

Session 6: The Production Process (Alan Atwood)
We’ll walk through the entire process of producing a show, from the initial idea to the finished product. Each step—including props, publicity, costumes, ticketing, scripts and rehearsals—will be discussed. You’ll walk away with a specific understanding of what is required to present a powerful stage production.

Session 7: Intensive Track Performances (Karitos Theatre Faculty)
Come watch your fellow Karitos students perform the scenes that they’ve prepared in the Acting/ Directing Intensive and the Playwriting workshops! You’ll hear feedback on each piece from our professional faculty members, giving you fresh insights for your own artistic work.

Session 8: Theatre Open Forum (Karitos Theatre Faculty)
Got a question about drama? This is the place to ask it! No topic is off-limits as our theatre faculty members pool their expertise (and occasional cluelessness) to answer your questions.

If you have any questions, please contact Department Chair George Halitzka at george@dramabygeorge.com.

NOTES
*We regret that if you are only registering for one day of the conference, or if you are a walk-in registrant, you will be unable to participate in our intensive tracks. However, you are more than welcome to “audit” (attend and observe) any sessions that you’d like!

**Regarding the Acting and Directing Tracks: We’ll do our best to honor everyone’s preference for acting or directing. However, because of the nature of theatrical performance, we may need to place some directing registrants as actors, or some acting registrants as directors. Don’t worry—directors can still learn a lot from being in actor’s shoes, and vice versa. Thank you for your understanding.
